Reshma Adwar: Ready to Serve Westfield

This candidate statement was originally published in Westfield Tap Into on September 22nd, 2025.

Service has always been at the center of my life - from organizing a Locks of Love hair drive to advocating for public health policies; and combating food insecurity to volunteering at the recent Tour de Westfield. I consistently show up, ready to contribute to every community I’ve belonged to. My decision to run for Town Council is a continuation of my lifelong commitment to serve.

I believe in the promise of our incredible town and the people who call it home. I’m excited to write the next chapter of Westfield, together!

Over the past several months I’ve had open, insightful conversations with many of you and heard what’s on your mind. As your Democratic Ward 1 Council Candidate, I’ve taken time to learn what has already been done to address some of your concerns and where we have opportunity to do more. I am ready to serve and promise to advocate for your needs and ensure resources are allocated to address them.

Here are some of my priorities, as well as some of yours:

  • Boost Downtown Vitality
A thriving downtown and vibrant shared spaces are the beating heart of Westfield. This is where our town comes together, where neighbors become friends, and what makes Westfield so special!
    • Champion the town’s nascent Arts Commission and elevate arts, culture, and community programming to foster belonging and fuel economic growth
    • Advance beautification projects to create inviting spaces that encourage people to stay, shop, dine and connect
    • Explore and implement resident-driven ideas for shared experiences that promote belonging and inclusion across all age groups
  • Enhance Roadway Safety
As a mom whose family enjoys cycling and walking in town, I want to ensure our roads are safe for everyone - pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
    • Champion proven safety measures including installing Beacon lights at street-level crosswalks and additional See Me flags for better pedestrian visibility
    • Ensure pedestrian routes are well lit, crosswalks are regularly repainted, and sidewalks and curbs are maintained
    • Adopt strong public safety measures at local level and advocate for state legislation around e-bikes to keep everyone on the road safe!
  • Support Public Safety
Our first responders protect and safeguard our town, and we must continue to support their efforts.
    • Commit to the needs of our accredited police department whose honorable work has led to decreased crime year after year
    • Advance the plan to build a modernized, state-of-the-art firehouse for our fire department
    • Equip first responders with tools and technology they need to stay safe while keeping Westfield safe
  • Ensure Responsible Development
How we manage development will shape Westfield for generations. Being intentional about preserving the charm and community feel of our town while ensuring it is set up for future success is incredibly important.
    • Hold developers accountable for agreed-upon public improvements and activate safeguards if needed to protect Westfield
    • Prioritize technology and traffic solutions to minimize disruptions during construction
    • Bolster businesses impacted by construction with targeted support to mitigate challenges
  • Strengthen Storm Water and Electrical Resilience
Flooding and power outages have impacted many families in Westfield. We need customized short-term actions as we chart towards long-term solutions.
    • Prioritize funding to address flooding in most heavily-affected areas
    • Adopt measures such as slotted manhole covers and upgraded street grading to improve storm water drainage
    • Empower Department of Public Works to identify and execute additional infrastructure upgrades
