Adwar in Action: Celebrating Our Community

This candidate statement originally appeared in the Westfield Leader on July 3rd, 2025.

Since Memorial Day, Westfield has celebrated so many facets of who we are as a community—from Pride and Juneteenth to honoring 150 years of service by the Westfield Fire Department. I’ve been reflecting on how these gatherings are a snapshot of what makes Westfield so special - a place where everyone belongs and every story matters.

On Memorial Day, I attended the American Legion BBQ. The moment of silence for fallen service members was very emotional. It gave me time to reflect on the freedoms we hold so dear and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It also was an event of camaraderie. My father-in-law and his brother served in the military. The members of the Legion took me and my husband right in and welcomed us like family. June is Pride Month, and the flag raising in front of town hall is a moment of joy and solidarity, a public acknowledgement that we not just embrace our LGBTQIA+ friends and neighbors, but do so while recognizing the struggle they endured to get here. Attending the event with my children was an opportunity to remind them that families come in all iterations, at the core of which is love.

Juneteenth, a historical turning point only recently recognized, opens up an opportunity to learn about the deep and oftentimes forgotten history of Westfield’s Black population and the vast contributions they made. While I was sad to miss the Trolley Tour by the Dr. Martin Luther King Foundation, I attended the service at Bethel Baptist Church led by the ever-gracious Pastor Clark. The service was joyous and filled with music, dance, and unity, followed by what can only be called a feast (delicious!). Speaking to others in attendance, I learned what Juneteenth means to residents in our community.

Right on the heels of Juneteenth was a parade and celebration for the 150th anniversary of the Westfield Fire Department. The history and evolution of the WFD was on display, showcasing how they have always served our community with dedication, innovation, and resourcefulness. I had the opportunity to speak with firefighters including Chief Duelks. As a healthcare provider who has worked on a burn unit and treated firefighters, I have seen firsthand the risk they take to save lives. It was important to me to thank and celebrate our local heroes in person. These events reflect what I love most about Westfield: we are a town that embraces its multitudes. We honor our differences, celebrate them together, and emerge a stronger community for it. That spirit is what I intend to carry forward if elected to Town Council.

Together, let’s keep building a Westfield that welcomes everyone home. I’d love to continue to conversation! If you would too, you can reach me at [email protected].
